Paris-based Arthur Bodolec’s Jack chairs are “furniture that comes alive.” It’s a bit difficult to convey the coolness with still photos, so check out the video below (which starts slow, action starts around 1:00):

‘jack’ by french product designer arthur bodolec, has created a stool that can be brought to ‘life’ through a simple touch. imagining a world where object can be woken up, given life and take form to express themselves, ‘jack’ is the first in a series of designs that transforms from an inert stool to a full functioning chair.

second generation of ‘jack’ furniture
based on its predecessor, the second generation of ‘jack’ furniture takes the form of a flower whose petals raise upon sitting.

The flower one is impossible unless it locks into open position. It doesn’t make sense because of leverage. the seat travels a lot less distance than the petals. Downward force on each petal would act like a long handled lever a small push downward on the petals could raise the person sitting.

Perhaps the reason why he didn’t display a working model. However, it would be possible to use some kind of damper/piston like device on each petal to counteract the leverage on the seat by the petal. Even a locking device activated by the pressure of the person sitting down could do it.
